Shelby, by Order of the Peaky Blinders

“We came here not to make enemies; we came here to make friends.” – Thomas Shelby .

With that sentiment, admittedly rare among the Peaky Blinders, PerfectDraft brings you six-litre kegs of Shelby, a 5% IPA brewed by Thornbridge Brewery The Shelby Company Ltd.

Yep, this is the official beer of the BAFTA award-winning TV series Peaky Blinders.

Peaky Blinders follows the fortunes of the much-feared Shelby family from Birmingham. The Peaky Blinders, based on a real gang, got their name sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps. Catch up on their violent, tormented and unerringly entertaining journey on Netflix. Filming for Series 6 was paused due to the Coronavirus epidemic, so will likely return to BBC One next year.

Steve Knight, creator and writer of Peaky Blinders, said: “Shelby beer is the first and only legitimate Peaky endorsed beer. It has been crafted to be the same brew the Peaky boys would have drunk in the pubs of Small Heath. It really is the authentic taste of the Peaky Blinders world.”

To create Shelby, Thornbridge’s brewers took their inspiration from the kind of beer styles that would have been around in 1919, at the time of the Peaky Blinders, and have created something that they feel, The Garrison [a pub owned by the Peaky Blinders] would be proud to serve.

Dom Metcalfe, Sales and Marketing Director, at Thornbridge, said: “We started thinking about what styles of beer would have been drunk in those days. We wanted to create a style of beer that didn’t alienate any consumers but also had an air of authenticity – hence the IPA style using English hops.”

THE RISE AND RISE OF TINY REBEL

So, what can you expect from Shelby?

Dom says: “Shelby pours a golden amber in colour with a nose of stone fruit and red berries, a gentle maltiness on the palate and a wonderful citrusy lemon bitterness.”

To achieve the authentic taste English IPA taste, Thornbridge’s brewers used a Yorkshire Ale yeast, Maris Otter malt and hopped the beer with East Kent Goldings. India Pale Ale was developed in England in the late 19th Century often for export to India, but became popular on home turf too.
